THE NEW BLACK

A portrait of fashion, from the inside. By Ruediger Glatz, since 2009.

The project

THE NEW BLACK is an artistic project by Ruediger Glatz, built on collaborations with the protagonists of this world and their institutions: media outlets, fashion houses, PR and model agencies. It is a work in progress — never finished.

Since 2009, houses, designers and performers have let me in — backstage, in the atelier, at the fitting, in the quiet minutes before a show. The result is an ongoing archive — a collaboration with VOGUE Germany since 2010, on a partner site they asked me to build in 2014 — of an industry that rarely lets anyone stay long enough to see it.

The next chapter depends on who opens the next door.

The photographer

Ruediger Glatz

Ruediger Glatz is an artist and photographer, working mostly in lens-based media, with installations and performance. He considers his work to be conceptual portraiture. He began THE NEW BLACK in 2009 and is in Paris at least twice a year, during the women's ready-to-wear shows, to work on the project. Since 2012 he has photographed the performances of Olivier Saillard, and he works with Tilda Swinton. His images appear in books published by Rizzoli, by his own imprint and by others.
